Then Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite of the fifth century AD suggested the angel realm was divided into nine hierarchical ranks. It was the Italian Dominican friar and priest Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) who classified the angels into three broad spheres, also referred to as hierarchies or triads. Within each sphere are three angelic choirs, also referred to as orders of angels, resulting in nine choirs altogether. It is this hierarchical structure that we still use today.
