Symbols of Gold in Alchemy
What is Alchemy
Alchemy can be thought of as primarily a precursor to chemistry, with philosophical, mystical and ritualistic magical elements. It has been practiced for centuries, in many parts of the world, include Europe, Africa, China and Asia, and was notably popular in Europe in the Middle Ages.
The Original Purpose of Alchemy
Originally, it's primary focus was to attain the ability to mature, purify and perfect substances, and to allow the human state to attain perfection. This would be attained by the creation of the Philosopher's Stone - a mystical substance that could achieve four aims:
- Turn lesser metals into precious noble metas such as gold
- Be an elixir of immortality
- Be a 'panacea' that could cure all diseases
- Be an 'alkahest' capable of dissolving every other substance, including gold
