Runes
What are Runes?
It is thought the word ‘rune’ is derived from the Proto-Germanic word ‘rūnō’, which means ‘letter’, ‘literature’ and ‘secret’ and also from the Germanic word ‘run’ and the Gothic ‘runa’, meaning ‘secret’ and ‘whisper’. (Koch 2020).
Runes are defined as sets of symbols that make up alphabets, used initially by Germanic people of the Viking Age of central and northern Europe, probably inspired by the Latin alphabet of the Romans, to communicate in a written form. Runology is the study of runes and their history.
As well as a form of communication, each individual runic symbol is said to hold an inherent powerful magical nature and hence they have also been used for magic and divination, and examples are found over 2000 years of history regarding this type of use.
The earliest references to runic inscriptions appear from the end of the 1st century AD, and their use continued until Latin began to take over from the 11th century AD onwards due to Christianisation.
However, runic alphabets continued to evolve and be used for more specialised writings and magical influence and examples can be found right up until the present day.
Elder Futhark Runes
Also known as Older Futhark, Old Futhark and Germanic Futhark, this set of 24 runes is said to be oldest, being in use from 2nd – 8th centuries AD.
It was used by the Germanic people and was inscribed on amulets, jewellery, pottery, tools and weapons. It was also carved in Scandinavian runestones, some of which can still be seen today, such as the Kylver Stone, found in a cemetery in Kylver, Stånga, Gotland, in 1903.
These are probably the most commonly used runes today for guidance and manifestation.
The runes you choose to buy should feel personal to you. You should wait for a natural inclination towards a type of rune material, style or alphabet. For example, if you are naturally drawn to a specific crystal, then runes carved in that crystal may be right for you.
If you want to feel an even more personal connection to your runes, consider making them yourself. You can simply paint them on pebbles or carve them in wood.
One thought is that the runes are more effective if they are reddened with blood, dye or paint. (Gundarsson, 1990). Please note, the author of this text does not advocate the use of blood in creating a personal set of runes.
The runes do not tell fortunes or predict the future. They provide guidance which can be drawn upon if you choose, and an insight into potential outcomes.
